Chihuahua This is the smallest dog in the world. It weighs, in general, just a little over 3 pounds (1.5 kg.), and some individuals only reach 2 pounds (900 kg.), a factor particularly prized in exhibitions. According to legend it originated in Mexico toward the end of the Aztec era, and takes its name from a province of that country. Some paleontologists argue that no dog existed in Mexico prior to the Spanish conquest. If this is true, then the most likely country of origin is China. It is easy to think of the Chihuahua as merely a lapdog. But in spite of its fragile appearance, it is hardy, courageous and a good barker. It will stand up to dogs larger than itself (all dogs are that). It is fond of alternating periods of rest with hunting for rats and squirrels. It is a playful dog, and like a terrier, it is possessed of a lively intelligence and quick reflexes. He is brave and loyal and will attach itself to one member of the family and will defend him or her to the death. The present standard calls for a round head with lean cheeks and an accentuated nasal stop. The Chihuahua should have shiny, somewhat prominent eyes which may be black, chestnut, blue or rusty red; large upright ears; and a tail long enough to be carried curved over its back. The colors of its coat may be fawn, chocolate, gray, silver or cream and black, but mixtures are also accepted. In general, litters consist of one or two pups. Deliveries are often difficult, and it is not unusual for the pups to be delivered by cesarean section.
