Greyhound History

Ancient Egyptian Tombs and Assyrian monuments show that the dog we call the English Greyhound existed 4000 years ago. Like the Deerhound, The greyhound is an extremely fast dog of aristocratic bearing. His aerodynamic shape equipts him perfectly for the pursuit of dear or wild boar. One source warns that greyhound's must not be allowed to run free, as they will attack chickens, cats, rabbits, and of the small domestic animals. Greyhound racing became a popular sport in the late 16th century. In the 1920s the sport caught on in the United States.

Greyhound Description

The greyhound has muscular flanks, double float pads, and in long head. His eyes are large and his sight is sharp. Greyhound's are very intelligent, lively, courageous, and graceful dogs. Yet, in spite of these characteristics, greyhound's were not popular as companion dogs, until recently, with the rise of the greyhound rescue movement. One source notes that despite their apparent coldness they are capable of great affection.
