Described by the English as "the Bloodhound in sheep's clothing," the Otter Hound is the rough- haired cousin of the Bloodhound. and the otter is the prey at which he is particularly aimed. In the course of years of hunting this quarry. the Otter Hound has become used to spending unbelievably long periods of time in the water without ill effect. He is able to pick up, early in the morning. the scent of an otter that has spent the night in a river. Then with his harmonious baritone voice. he will alert the hunter that the animal is close by. Although it is said that he was the issue of a crossing between the Wire Fox Terrier and the Harrier, it appears that through his veins there also runs the blood of another unidentified breed. His height ranges between 24 and 27 inches (61 to 69 cm.). and his weight varies between 75 and 1 1 5 pounds (34 and 52,1 kg.). The permissible colors are gray, gray mixed with yellow, reddish. black and blue with fiery markings. He is very brave. resistant. and happy in the water. but can also become a good family pet. being particularly patient with children. Otter Hound
